all about the wildlife living in our paradise
The kangaroos that live on and around our property are Eastern Greys.
Some interesting facts from Wikipedia:-
.... from before European settlement, and to this day, the kangaroo has been a very important animal to Australian Aborigines. Aherrenge (people of the red kangaroo) is a dreaming site for the Alyawarr tribe in the Northern Territory. John and I spent 3 years living and working with these people.
.... the female kangaroo is usually pregnant in permanence except on the day she gives birth. She has the ability to freeze the development of an embryo until the previous joey is able to leave the pouch. This can happen in times of drought.
.... there is a link between the hopping action of the kangaroo and its breathing, as the feet leave the ground the air is expelled. Bringing the feet forward for landing refills the lungs.
Our kangaroos lie in the sun on the hill in winter and under our olive trees in the heat of summer. They can be a bit pesky (our advice is just to watch) as they like to dig and lie in the cool soil, it is the reason why we don't spray around the olive trees, but we love them. We also have lots of bird species, lizards, echidnas and lace-monitors.
We have the most amazing birdlife living here. A recent discovery by a guest was of 2 Brown Falcons, usually travelling in pairs. I hope they are not seeking out our cute little wrens. We have Wedge-Tailed Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Babblers, Pied Butcher Birds, Magpies, Willy Wagtails, Peewees, Plovers, Strawneck Ibises, Currawongs, Egrets, Eastern Rosellas, Pink Galahs, Swamp Hens, Ducks, Australian Ravens, Black Cockatoos, Swallows, Crested Pigeons, Nankeen Kestrels, Wattle Birds, Pardalotes and I know there are more and will add them when I remember. Of course then there are the lizards, the frill neck and Lace Monitors. Bring your bird book and see what you can discover.
